A valued, returning client has asked MMW to create a new lake house for an expanding family of doctors and medical providers on the shores of Flathead Lake in northern Montana. An existing garage was built a few years ago on the site. MMW looked to honor that structure yet build a modern, low maintenance home that takes in the lake setting. A glass enclosed, suspended bridge structure connects the garage to the main home, allowing site drainage to run beneath it. The existing garage features a hip roof with six foot overhangs, a design element which has been carried through into the new glass bridge and main house. On the main level, open kitchen-dining-living spaces are contained under the same plane and material as the roof overhangs for maximum indoor/outdoor connection. Off the dining area, a 20’ glass door opens up to the deck, basically doubling the dining/living space when open. A concrete fireplace anchors the glass home at lakeside. Wide decks provide multiple dining and lounging spaces off the public areas. The lower level contains guest bedrooms and baths, a bunk room and a kids’/young adults’ lounge. Paths from the covered lower level patio lead to a stone fire pit and down to the lake.
