On May 18th, 2016, a fire destroyed the long standing Mission Mountains Mercantile in Condon, Montana. “The Merc,” as known to the locals, was the heart of the small town and the only service for 70 miles in the Swan Valley. Knowing that the loss of The Merc long term would have a devastating effect on the community, the owners decided to rebuild.
The new store will offer much of what it did before, as well as new items. The aesthetic is reminiscent of a rural agrarian building, clad in rusting Core-ten steel, with large trusses and exposed fasteners and the signature front porch where many important conversations have taken place over the years. On the west side, patrons will enjoy an outdoor patio with majestic views of the Mission Mountains, clearly the store’s namesake. The interior has been reorganized and will feature abundant windows, trusses and display walls for an artist that the owner represents. The look and offerings of the new store walk a fine line between meeting the daily needs of the locals, and being attractive to the seasonal community that resides in the Swan.
Construction will begin April 2017, with completion expected near the end of 2017.
