GRASSLAND CABIN
Missoula, Montana
The cabin is placed in native grasslands with a view of the Flint Creek Mountains to the south. The owner asked that the cabin disappear into the landscape as much as possible. The design is partially buried on the west end and gradually steps down the hill from west to east. The roof is flat to keep the profile as low as possible while maintaining a 10′-0″ ceiling height in the main living space. The retaining walls extend in each direction to give the effect that the building is growing out of the grassland.
Planters with native grasses are incorporated at the top of the retaining walls, trellis, and the roof’s upper perimeter. Large windows face the main view to the south and open at the corners to take advantage of the expansive grassland views. The plan has a central living space, en suite bedrooms at each end, and support spaces along the north. As one enters the home they see through the home and are immediately greeted with expansive views to the south.
