VESSEL RESIDENCE

Missoula, Montana

A sentinel is defined as, “A soldier or guard whose job is to stand and keep watch.” Residences with this feel are often associated with the Italian countryside or Wine Country of California, where the home offers refuge across the prospect of a landscape. Riffing off of these ideologies, The Vessel Residence has this feel as it elegantly nestles back into the hillside and overlooks the valley below. Stretching over eight acres, this is a one-story home with walk-out basement, attached garage, barn, and working vineyard for a young family of five. Organic materials and traditional, simple gable-pitched volumes are joined together for subtle and sublime experiences as one interacts with the home on the exterior as well as moves through it within.

Inside the home, a quiet aesthetic is given through subtle texture, refined detailing, and unexpected moments of light and views. The floorplan is organized around the kitchen – the heart of the home – with all other functions radiating out like petals. An avid chef, baker, and entertainer, our client wanted a space that would put her at the center of the party. Movement through the home is choreographed with highs, lows, and unexpected pauses and pulls. Outdoor living spaces, inspired by sparse Tuscan courtyards, are provided on all sides of the home allowing for the full experience and occupation of the hillside site. Disciplined, with a heartbeat, calm and/or jovial, functional and inspiring… this home will be its own beautiful ballet each and every day.
