HARMONY

The Beautiful Balance

Harmonious buildings epitomize a seamless fusion of functionality and aesthetic grace. They are meticulously crafted to not only meet the practical needs of their inhabitants, but also to resonate cohesively with their environment. In essence, by seamlessly integrating with the surrounding landscape, these structures elevate both the natural scenary and the internal architectural space.

At MMW Architects, we firmly believe harmonious buildings have the transformative power to elevate the human spirit and imbue our everyday experiences with joy and inspiration. They serve as more than mere structures; they are beacons of beauty and sources of delight, enriching the lives of all who encounter them.

Seamless Integration

Our approach for every project is characterized by the meticulous establishment of a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment. This is achieved through a strategic integration of natural and/or local materials, a deliberate emphasis on the infusion of natural light, and a commitment to extending architectural boundaries in a manner that seamlessly merges with the backdrop. As a matter of fact, our methodology ensures that every structure melds with its context, fostering a sense of unity and coherence within the broader landscape.

Therefore, whether we embark on a new construction, undertake an addition to an existing structure, or breathe new life into a renovation project, the project never feels out of place.

Historic Preservation

We firmly believe effective historic preservation requires a comprehensive understanding of the historical context of the buildings and landscapes in which we work. This belief guides our approach as we analyze the architectural cadence of neighboring historic structures, if applicable, aiming to craft designs that resonate with authenticity.

Additionally, our dedication to preserving and enhancing the architectural heritage of Missoula is recognized by the Missoula Historic Preservation Commission. Most recently, we were acknowledged for our work on both the Radius and Relic Galleries, located in the heart of downtown Missoula, with Adaptive Reuse and Compatible New Construction awards. We remain committed to blending the old with the new in ways that respect and enhance the original work.

Responsible Design

At MMW we listen carefully to your vision and strive to design in a way that responds poetically to your aspirations and to the particular beauty and opportunities of your site. In urban areas, we are sensitive to revitalizing the neighborhood with our interventions. In rural landscapes, we search for a partnership between architecture and site – a deep interconnection.

Emphatically, we design responsibly, balancing aesthetic excellence with function, budget, and sustainable ideals. We believe your place should nurture and enrich life’s daily rituals through beauty and function.

STEWARDSHIP

An Architect’s Responsibility

A healthy environment, both indoors and out, is the foundation of a prosperous future. We believe it is our responsibility as architects to be careful stewards of the earth’s resources. We are committed to a pragmatic practice of sustainable design that maximizes value to the project.

Futhermore, holistic sustainable design is founded on a deep understanding of the site, the climate, and the way people, energy, and materials flow through the building. Beautiful buildings that work well, and that give people pleasure to be in, are sustainable. Such buildings will endure and contribute to our community for generations

Human Communities

We pride ourselves on being a conscientious guardian of our human communities, recognizing that each structure we design and construct is not merely a standalone entity, but a vital component within a broader cultural continuum. Our architectural practice is deeply rooted in an acute sensitivity towards the historical precendents that shape our communities, ensuring that while our designs pay homage to the past, they also pave the way for a forward-looking urban furture. Likewise, we create places that foster human community, facilitate interaction, and encourage the shared human experience. Through this lens, our buildings become more than mere structures; they are catalysts for community engagement, cultural expression, and collective endeavor.

Global & Local Environment

Our buildings lead in environmental performance and carbon reduction. We strive toward regenerative design; buildings that heal the scars of previous development. As participants in the AIA 2030 Committment, we are devoted to low carbon, high efficiency building solutions for every project. We all bear responsibility for the global challenges, which is why we are a part of the Architects Advocate Network and are using the latest science-based building technology, in combination with our local knowledge, to lead toward a more sustainable and vibrant future. By growing our expertise in LEED, WELL, Passivehouse, the Living Building Challenge, and other evolving certification systems, we benchmark our work against the highest human and ecological sustainable certification systems in the world.

Client Resources

MMW is a steward of our client’s resources. Our buildings are durable, flexible, and adaptable, ensuring their utility into the future. Through site and program analysis, we identify opportunities for triple-bottom-line benefits – placing equal weight on social, economic, and environmental impact. These include passive energy savings, active energy generation, water management, and more. We take pride in energy modeling our projects as part of our design process and to provide our clients with the knowledge they need to make good decisions. Essential systems and methods are identifed in support of these goals and are tested against energy and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) modeling. Data is then graphically translated for  Predicted Energy Use Intensity (pEUI) to demonstrate value to the client and contractor. Subsequently, this data will correlate with cost estimates and return on investment in relation to project goals.

Mass Timber

Mass timber construction offers a sustainable alternative that reduces carbon emissions, minimizes construction waste, and leverages renewable resources, benefitting both the environment and local economies. This method, supported by collaborations with industry leaders, showcases mass timber’s practical and environmental benefits.

Choosing mass timber over traditional materials significantly cuts the construction industry’s carbon footprint, thanks to the carbon-sequestering capabilities of wood from sustainably-managed forests and the efficiency gains from using less material and prefabricated components. Evidently, this speeds up construction times and reduces waste and reinforces Montana’s role as a frontrunner in sustainable construction, driven by its forestry history and the new opportunities presented by mass timber for ecological construction and local economic growth.

MMW built the first full Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) building commissioned by the State of Montana. The Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Conference Center Addition was seen as a way to demonstrate the use of CLT in Montana. As a result, the project provides exposure to design professionals, contractors, and developers in the surrounding regions. With support from the governor’s executive order to promote the use of Montana wood products, all lumber for the CLT was harvested and manufactured in Montana. The project was recently featured in both the 2022 International Mass Timber Report and Woodworks’ Mass Timber Design Manual Volume II.

Looking to the future, MMW is continually working to engage in mass timber projects. Recently, we designed a mass-timber mixed-use development that provided 200 residential units, retail, & commerical space for other small businesses. We are excited for more opportunities to grow mass timber construction in Montana!

EQUITY

It’s JUST The Beginning

At MMW Architects, our ethos extends far beyond mere architectural design. We are driven by a profound commitment to fostering positive change within society, both through the structures we create and the manner in which we conduct ourselves. Our mission is twofold: to contribute to the physical landscape with innovative and functional buildings, and to actively engage in the pursuit of social justice through our actions.

We’re creating a workplace where every individual’s unique perspective is not only respected, but also celebrated. By embracing diversity in all its forms, we enrich our creative process and enhance the quality of our designs. We are dedicated to fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect, open communication, and equal opportunity, ensuring that everyone feels empowered to contribute their best work.

EQUITY

It’s JUST The Beginning

MMW Architects is the first company in the state of Montana to receive a JUST label from the International Living Future Institute (ILFI). ILFI is premised on the belief that providing a compelling vision for the future is a fundamental requirement for reconciling humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Similar to ILFI, MMW believes in building for a sustainable future. Being certified with JUST means we are now bringing another layer of transparency to our clients.

The JUST label allows us to disclose operations, including employee treatment and where we make financial and community investments. These metrics also help us improve social equity and employee engagement. Firms are rated in the areas of: Diversity & Inclusion, Equity, Employee Health, Employee Benefits, Stewardship, and Purchasing & Supply Chain. Having our JUST certification means holding ourselves accountable, not only as an office, but as an architecture firm in Montana.

Staff Development

We instill a culture of continuous growth, training, education, and opportunity. MMW Architects is dedicated to creating an inclusive workplace as well as analyzing how our design practice affects the communities we work with. With this in mind, we value our team’s individual differences as a way to grow our collective knowledge and culture.

We understand that diversity, equity, and inclusion reach beyond the social realm and we have a unique position to effect change in the spaces we design and inhabit. In order to promote equity within our work, we have to promote it in our office. We are committed to supporting the success of all staff members.

Community Engagement

MMW Architects acknowledges the structural inequities prevalent in our community related to race, gender, and income and we continue to learn and unlearn ways to approach our work with transparency and awareness of power imbalances that exist in the design process. Our internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee provides continuous office engagement opportunities to educate ourselves about these issues and how they affect our field and community.

MMW participates in numerous pro bono and volunteering services within our community knowing we can provide the skills needed to create impact of all sizes. Additionally, MMW donates more than 3% of its net profits to nonprofits making a difference in our community. Many of the organizations we support are listed below.
